Seasonal Affective Disorder

Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression that often occurs during the change of season, more so during a particular season in a year. As per the International Classification of Diseases ( ICD-11), this seasonal pattern of change in mood usually happens within the context of recurrent depressive disorder and bipolar disorders. It is important to note that a seasonal pattern is different from an episode that is coincidental with a particular season and is majorly related to other psychological stressors (e.g seasonal unemployment)

Signs of Seasonal Affective Disorder

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is often misunderstood and overlooked. It typically develops in response to seasonal changes, particularly reduced sunlight during the colder months. While the patterns of SAD may return year after year, with the right professional support and coping strategies, recovery and stability are possible.

Seasonal Affective Disorder symptoms can show up as:

Low Mood in Certain Seasons

Feeling persistently sad, tearful, or low during specific months, often in winter.

Loss of Interest

Decreased enjoyment in activities, hobbies, or social interactions.

Low Energy & Fatigue

Feeling tired, heavy, or drained, even after rest.

Meera Joshi

For the longest time, winters felt like a battle I couldn’t win. Living with Seasonal Affective Disorder drained my energy and hope. At Sukoon, the therapists helped me understand what was happening and guided me step by step. For the first time, I feel like I can manage the seasons instead of being controlled by them.
