Small Space, Big Fear. Recognise This Feeling?

Claustrophobia is a specific phobia where being in confined or enclosed spaces triggers intense fear or anxiety. It may show up in everyday situations like elevators, small rooms, or crowded areas.

Claustrophobia comes under anxiety and fear-related disorders, specifically under the heading of specific phobias. Here, the person will exhibit symptoms of most anxiety disorders, where the person’s fight or flight system gets activated, or they avoid getting exposed to the anxiety-provoking situations. It is important to note that anxiety or fear shown is out of proportion to actual danger. The person with claustrophobia either avoids going to enclosed spaces or endures with extreme anxiety and fear.

With the right professional support and coping strategies, it is possible to regain comfort and confidence.

Claustrophobia symptoms can show up as:

Intense Fear in Enclosed Spaces

Feeling extreme fear or panic in small rooms, elevators, tunnels, or crowded areas.

Shortness of Breath or Rapid Heartbeat

Physical symptoms such as breathlessness, sweating, trembling, or a racing heart when in confined spaces.

Avoidance Behaviours

Going out of your way to avoid situations where you might feel trapped, such as public transport or closed rooms.

Ananya Verma

Small rooms, elevators, and even crowded trains used to feel impossible for me. Claustrophobia was slowly shrinking my world. At Sukoon, my therapist didn’t just listen—she guided me step by step, helping me face these fears at my own pace. Over time, I learned coping strategies, practised gradually, and built confidence. Today, I can step into spaces I once avoided, and it feels like true freedom.

Inpatient Psychiatry in India is always equated to an asylum kind of care but I have seen Sukoon and met with the founders, and their vision seems to be very aligned to what a lot of our patients want and what our families want.
