What is Schizophrenia?

Often mistaken for ‘split personality’, Schizophrenia is a complex mental health disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels and behaves. Caused by genetics, brain chemistry, and environmental factors, it can affect relationships, daily functioning and independence.

While its impact can be overwhelming, with timely professional care and consistent support, stabilising symptoms is possible.

Schizophrenia symptoms fall into 3 main types

Positive Symptoms (added experiences, not typical in healthy individuals)

- Hallucinations: Hearing voices, seeing things, or feeling sensations that aren’t real
- Delusions: Strong beliefs not based in reality (e.g., being watched, controlled)
- Disorganised Speech: Difficulty organising thoughts, leading to speech that is hard to follow.

Negative Symptoms (loss of normal functioning)

- Social withdrawal and isolating from family, friends or daily interactions
- Reduced motivation to engage in daily tasks
- Difficulty in expressing feelings or emotional flatness

Cognitive Symptoms (thinking and processing difficulties)

- Poor concentration and focus
- Memory problems
- Slowed thinking and decision-making

Ishita Nair

“It's not something that everyone understands. Or how it impacts them or your entire life. For the longest time, I was living in guilt... how I could help my sister... if there was something I could have done to prevent it. The doctors here at Sukoon helped me get her symptoms better. She's stable now, even recognises me. Slowly we're getting there.”

Inpatient Psychiatry in India is always equated to an asylum kind of care but I have seen Sukoon and met with the founders, and their vision seems to be very aligned to what a lot of our patients want and what our families want.
